The experimental cellar in Bridgehampton, the rosé estate in Sagaponack with two addresses, and the original château in Water Mill — what each one pours, what it costs, and which one is open when the others are hosting a wedding.

A short list, and that is the honest version

The Hamptons is not a wine trail. Three tasting rooms are open to visitors on the South Fork against 34 on the North Fork, and Peconic Bay sits between the two, so driving from one fork to the other costs most of a day. Plan these three as an afternoon while you are already down here: Channing Daughters is the wine argument, with 25 varieties and skin-contact whites nobody else grows; Wölffer is the setting, and remember it is two separate addresses; Duck Walk’s Water Mill château is the cheap, wide, everybody-finds-something stop. Duck Walk Vineyards Southampton

The Damianos family’s original Hamptons château, open since 1994 on about 30 acres of vines, with the widest list out here: dry reds and whites, sparkling, a Vidal Blanc ice wine, and a blueberry port.

Eighteen dollars buys four wines including reserves and dessert, which makes it the cheapest tasting on either fork and the easiest stop for a group that cannot agree on anything.

Walk in with a small party; six or more must reserve by phone and buy the tasting, and even then the reservation does not hold a seat — outdoor seating is first-come. Light snacks are sold, and you may bring your own light snacks if you buy wine. Music Saturday and Sunday 1 to 5, roughly May to October. Published hours conflict between pages, so call 631-726-7555. This is not Duck Walk North in Southold.

Channing Daughters Winery

The most experimental cellar on Long Island, hidden in a Bridgehampton sculpture garden: Tocai Friulano, Blaufränkisch, wild-ferment field blends, vermouth, and the skin-contact whites that made its name on Manhattan wine lists.

Twenty-five varieties and orange wine on the South Fork — this is the one Hamptons room where the wine, not the scene, is the reason to come.

Daily 11 to 6, walk-ins fine but six or more must reserve, five wines about $28, and tables turn in 75 to 90 minutes. Saturdays add a $5 per person reservation fee. Mecox cheese, crackers, and salumi are sold, with food trucks on Friday and Saturday evenings. Production is tiny and the caps sit around 30. Reports on the weekend policy for children have conflicted, so ask when you book.

Wölffer Estate

Fifty-five acres in Sagaponack under winemaker Roman Roth, and the estate that turned rosé into a summer object: Summer in a Bottle, Christian’s Cuvée Merlot, and an estate cider.

Two completely different visits under one name — a seated Tasting Room on Sagg Road, or the walk-up Wine Stand on Montauk Highway for sunset over the Merlot planted in 1990.

The Tasting Room at 139 Sagg Rd is seated with Tock reservations, walk-ins only if there is space, capped around eight to ten with a pergola for nine to 15 — and it closes for weddings, which is exactly when the Wine Stand at 3312 Montauk Hwy earns its keep, walk-in daily 11 to 8. Cheese, charcuterie, and small plates at both, no outside food at either, and no dogs.

How many wineries are in the Hamptons?

That is the whole South Fork in this guide, against 34 open wineries on the North Fork — the Hamptons is a place you visit for one or two estates, not for a trail.

Can you visit the Hamptons and the North Fork on the same day?

No, and it is the most common planning mistake out here. Peconic Bay separates the two forks, so driving from one to the other eats most of an afternoon. Pick a fork per day. If tasting is the point of the trip, the North Fork carries it; if you are already staying in the Hamptons, these three are the ones worth your time.

Which Hamptons winery is the best one to visit?

Channing Daughters if the wine is the reason you came — 25 varieties, wild-ferment field blends, skin-contact whites, and vermouth, in a sculpture garden. What is the difference between Wölffer’s Tasting Room and the Wine Stand?

They are two different addresses with two different personalities. The Tasting Room at 139 Sagg Road in Sagaponack is seated, booked on Tock, capped around eight to ten guests, with a pergola for nine to 15 — and it closes for weddings. The Wine Stand at 3312 Montauk Highway is walk-in only, daily 11 to 8, and looks over Merlot planted in 1990. When the Tasting Room is shut for an event, the Wine Stand is the fallback.

Do South Fork wineries need reservations?

Channing takes walk-ins but requires a reservation for six or more, holds tables 75 to 90 minutes, and charges $5 per person to reserve on Saturdays. Wölffer’s Tasting Room is seated on Tock with walk-ins only if there is space, while the Wine Stand needs nothing. Duck Walk seats small parties on a walk-in basis; six or more must reserve by phone and buy the tasting, and even then the reservation does not hold a seat.

Is there food at the Hamptons wineries?

Yes, though none of the three runs a full kitchen. Channing sells Mecox cheese, crackers, and salumi, with food trucks on Friday and Saturday evenings. Wölffer serves cheese, charcuterie, and small plates at both locations. Duck Walk sells light snacks and is the only one that lets you bring your own light snacks, provided you buy wine. None of them allows outside alcohol.

Can you bring a dog to a South Fork winery?

Only to Duck Walk Southampton, which publishes a yes and also allows a picnic. Wölffer does not allow dogs at either of its locations. Channing publishes no pet policy we can point to, so treat it as a no until they tell you otherwise. On children, reports about Channing’s weekend rule have conflicted, so ask when you reserve rather than arriving and hoping.

Is Duck Walk in Water Mill the same as Duck Walk in Southold?

No, and the two get mixed up constantly. The Water Mill château at 231 Montauk Highway is the original 1994 Hamptons site on the South Fork. Duck Walk North at 44535 Main Road in Southold is a later second location on the North Fork. They sit barely ten miles apart across Peconic Bay and a long drive apart around it. Both are Damianos family properties with overlapping wine lists.
