A romantic winery is not the one with the best wine — it is the one that will not seat a bachelorette party at the next table. Every room here pours at a table or a small bar, has a view or a garden worth staying in, and keeps a house rule that protects both: quiet barns in Cutchogue and on Oregon Road, the one bluff room above the Sound, a rosé-only garden in Southold, two estates out in the Hamptons. Plan two stops rather than five — a seated flight runs about 90 minutes and $20 to $40 a person, and most of these rooms sell the cheese board instead of letting you bring one. If the day is really a group, the group outings list is the one that takes a bus.

The Massoud family has farmed this Aquebogue estate since 1983, and it still opens an afternoon gently: dry Chenin Blanc, a deck over the vines, and Adirondack chairs on the lawn from May to November.

Macari, Jamesport Vineyards, and Mattebella require a booking; Lieb, Terra Vite, Sparkling Pointe, and Wölffer’s Tasting Room all strongly recommend one. Walk-in stays realistic at Kontokosta, where reservations are not necessary, at Croteaux, which takes none at all, and at Coffee Pot Cellars, Chronicle for five or fewer, Borghese for six or fewer, and Bedell for fifteen or fewer.
A seated flight on this list generally runs from the low $20s to the low $40s a person. Rose Hill is $20 to $34, Lieb pours $26, $28, and $36 flights, Bedell runs about $28 to $32, and Macari’s seasonal five-wine flight is $40 with the Barrel Cellar experience at $75. Most of these houses sell cheese and charcuterie and do not allow outside food, so budget for the board too.
The North Fork has the density — you can pair two neighboring tasting rooms without a long drive, and 22 of these 24 estates are there. The South Fork is a separate day: Wölffer Estate in Sagaponack, where the Sagg Road Tasting Room is the seated option and the Montauk Highway Wine Stand is the sunset one, and Channing Daughters in Bridgehampton, where tables run 75 to 90 minutes.
The small rooms, and most of them cap the table to stay that way. Chronicle takes five, Clovis Point and McCall six, Lieb, Rose Hill, and Croteaux eight. Coffee Pot Cellars is a roadside room where the winemaker often pours. Kontokosta is calm because of the Long Island Sound rather than its size, and Sparkling Pointe is formal table service, not a lawn party.
Most of them, which is exactly why they are here. Lieb takes no buses, limos, or vans, McCall no limos or tour buses, Kontokosta permits none of the three, Borghese allows neither buses nor limos, Croteaux refuses shuttles, buses, and South Harbor drop-offs, Rose Hill posts a no on buses and bachelorette parties, and Sparkling Pointe will not seat an unbooked party bus. If you hired a car, confirm the house rule first — or use the group outings list instead.
Rarely, on both counts. Borghese still encourages a BYO picnic and Peconic Bay sells a bookable picnic among the vines, but most of these rooms allow no outside food. Dogs are welcome outdoors at Macari on the lawn, Rose Hill on the patio, and Croteaux in the garden, and banned at Kontokosta, Sparkling Pointe, Mattebella, Sannino, Channing Daughters, and Wölffer, with Clovis Point taking service animals only.
May through November, when the outdoor rooms are open: Paumanok sets Adirondack chairs on the lawn, Lieb opens the patio over the vines, and Croteaux runs its garden from April into late November. Winter thins the list — Croteaux closes, McCall shuts for January and February, and Mattebella often drops to Friday through Sunday.
