Long Island Tasting Fees, and What the Money Actually Buys

What a tasting actually costs

We read the tasting menu, the booking system and the visit page of every open room on the East End. 26 of the 45 publish what a flight costs. The median is $25, the cheapest wine flight is $18, and the most expensive single tasting on the list is $98 a head.

So plan on $25 a room and you will rarely be caught short. The rest of this page is about why that number is not the whole story. Two rooms charging the same $20 can pour you three wines or six. 19 rooms publish nothing at all. And the moment there are six of you, the price you looked up stops applying.

13 rooms have a single price. The other 13 publish a range, because there is a second flight above the entry one — and in a few cases a third that costs more than dinner.

Every published price, cheapest first

Where you see a range, the first number is the entry flight and the second is the top of what that room pours in house. 15 of the 26 prices are $25 or less.

Only two South Fork rooms publish a price at all: Duck Walk Vineyards Southampton at $18 and Channing Daughters Winery at $28. The Hamptons look cheap on paper because the room everyone associates with Hamptons wine, Wölffer Estate, posts no number. Two prices are not a fork, so ignore any claim that one side of the island is cheaper than the other.

Count the pours, not the dollars

16 rooms say how many wines are in the flight. Divide the price by the pours and the order changes completely.

The median winery pour is $5.60. Bridge Lane Tasting Room sits at the bottom at $3.33, because it pours six wines for $20 while most rooms pour four. Ev&Em Vineyards is at the top at $11.25, but that flight comes with charcuterie, and RGNY builds food pairings into its $60. Once a plate arrives the arithmetic stops being fair, so use it to compare the $18-to-$30 rooms, which is where most of a day happens.

Harbes Vineyard is the one to remember. Same $20 as Bridge Lane Tasting Room, three wines instead of six: $6.67 a pour against $3.33. Neither is wrong — you go to Harbes for the farm and the doughnuts, not for a value flight — but the price on its own tells you nothing.

19 rooms publish no price, and it is rarely about money

This is the biggest gap in every other guide. 19 of the 45 open rooms have no flight price on their own site, 14 of them wineries. People assume a hidden expensive number. Usually it is the opposite: these are walk-in bars where the price is on a chalkboard and changes with what is open.

• Chalkboard bars, priced at the counter: Kontokosta Winery, Croteaux Vineyards, Pellegrini Vineyards, Pindar Vineyards, Jason's Vineyard, Paumanok Vineyards, Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard and Greenport Harbor Brewing. Turning up and asking is how these rooms are meant to work.
• Prices that have gone stale online: Coffee Pot Cellars last published about $21 for all its wines in 2023, Chronicle Wines’s older listing was about $25 for five, Clovis Point has been reported at $25 to $30, and Jason's Vineyard at about $15 for four. Useful for budgeting, not worth quoting at the bar.
• Priced by the group, not the flight: McCall Wines publishes a $40 a head minimum for seven or more and no walk-in price, and Peconic Bay Vineyards publishes about $55 for its garden reservation and $125 for a picnic while leaving the walk-in number off.
• Poured by the owners at home: Farrm Wines hosts one group at a time on its farmhouse deck and lists no tasting fee. Visitor reviews describe the tasting as free; the bottles cost $20 to $40.
• Not selling flights at all: Jamesport Farm Brewery, Long Island Spirits, Twin Fork Beer Co and Riverhead Ciderhouse sell pints, cocktails and cider by the glass, so a flight price would misrepresent them.

Wölffer Estate fits none of those. It is the best-known tasting room on the South Fork, it books seated tables of eight to ten through Tock, and it publishes no price anywhere. Call before you build a Hamptons afternoon around it.

The fee also buys you the table

Nobody itemises this part. If a room takes bookings, the booking has a length, and it is shorter than most people plan for. Channing Daughters Winery turns tables in 75 to 90 minutes. Rooted North, McCall Wines and Terra Vite run 90 minutes. Macari Vineyards and the garden at Peconic Bay Vineyards run two hours. Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard sells two-hour windows between noon and five, and Clovis Point splits its weekend into two seatings.

That clock, not the driving, is what caps a day at two or three rooms — the arithmetic is in how many wineries you can visit in one day. It also changes how the prices compare. A $26 seated flight at Rooted North and a $22 walk-in at Corey Creek Tap Room are not the same product: one is ninety minutes at a table with your name on it, the other is as long as you feel like standing at a bar.

The premium for sitting down is almost nothing. The median seated flight is $26, against $25 where there is both a bar and tables. About a dollar.

At six people, the price changes

Every number above is the price for a couple or a small party. Cross a room’s published group threshold — usually six, sometimes seven or eight — and the flight is replaced by a prepaid rate or a minimum spend, and it is higher.

Two things follow from that table.

• Eight people at Bridge Lane Tasting Room is $200, not the $160 the walk-in price suggests. At Rooted North, the same eight cannot use the $26 flight at all.
• The cheap group rates need lead time. Chronicle wants 48 hours, and the prepaid formats want the money before you arrive.

What the menu price leaves out

• A booking fee. Channing Daughters Winery charges $5 a head to book a Saturday table, on top of the $28 flight.
• Gratuity, added automatically. Terra Vite adds 20 per cent for six or more, and Pugliese Vineyards adds it to group tastings. On a $40 minimum that is $8 a head you did not plan for.
• The tour, priced separately. Pindar Vineyards runs a $35 public tour at weekends from May to October, Mattebella Vineyards sells tour and tasting together at $38, and Sannino Vineyard’s Vine to Wine is $100.
• Food, which you usually cannot bring. Only a handful of rooms allow outside food, so a cheese board is a real line in the budget. Where the plate is included — Ev&Em Vineyards and RGNY — the flight looks expensive and is not.
• A fee waiver, which nobody publishes. No room states that the tasting fee comes off a bottle. Ask if you like, but do not build the day on it.

What a day actually costs

Two people, three rooms, entry flights at the median: $150 on tasting before anything else. Add a cheese board and a bottle to take home and a couple realistically lands at $230 to $270. Two rooms instead of three brings the same day nearer $180 to $220, which is the figure in the full planning guide. The third stop is always the expensive one, because it is another whole flight each.

Three habits keep that number honest.

• Check the pour count before the price. It moves the value more than the dollars do.
• Assume the 19 silent rooms sit near the $25 median, and carry a card either way.
• If there are six or more of you, look up the group rate. The flight price is not what you will be charged.
